20-year-old dead – police warn against new drug – VG

Police are warning of what they call a “new and very powerful narcotic substance” after a 20-year-old from Nedre Romerike died from it in October.

Published:

– The substance is called Protonitazen and is even stronger than Fentanyl, writes the police in the East on their Facebook page.

Last week Oslo University Hospital has also warned on the substance, which they call a synthetic opioid.

– Protonitazen is a synthetic opioid that is not in clinical use, but is sold illegally. It is very potent, which means that a small dose can cause life-threatening effects such as respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest, the hospital writes.

According to OUS, the substance has never been detected in Norway.

– We are concerned that people may ingest it without realizing how strong it is. Even a small dose can be life-threatening, police write.

They want anyone with information about the substance to get in touch.

– It is of great importance to map where and who distributes this substance, in order to prevent new deaths or overdoses.
