The mayor of the southern Spanish municipality of Zahara de la Sierra has decided to completely isolate his city from the outside world. For this purpose, four of the five access roads were blocked, making it impossible to get through.
The reason for this is that so far there has not been a single Corona case among the approximately 1400 inhabitants of the village. “It’s been two weeks since the lockdown and we still don’t have any infections. So it looks good, »said the mayor CNN.
Cars are disinfected
The residents of Zahara de la Sierra are completely behind the decision of their mayor. Almost a quarter of the population is over 65 years old, and some Corona cases have been reported in nearby villages and towns.
The police stand at the only entrance to the city. In addition, two men in protective clothing wash every single car with bleach and water. In addition, the cars have to drive through a disinfectant puddle so that the wheels are also cleaned. “Not a single car comes into the city that has not been disinfected,” says the mayor.
Streets and houses cleaned
But not only the cars are cleaned. Every Monday and Thursday, a group of ten people in protective suits walks through the city and disinfects the streets, public squares and facades of the houses. In addition, two women carry groceries from local shops to the houses every day so that residents have to leave their homes as little as possible.
Solidarity among the population does not end there. It is also cooked for the elderly and you help each other wherever possible. For example, repairs are carried out by neighbors, or technically savvy people have offered to digitize the photos of older people during the curfew.
Functioning economy
All of this works because the local economy is mainly made up of autonomous businesses. Financial assistance is available for companies that typically rely on customers or tourists. The cost of electricity or water is also borne by local businesses.
Spain is one of the European countries hardest hit by the corona pandemic. So far, over 100,000 people have been infected and 10,000 people have died from the virus.
