20 minutes – Taal volcano is a ticking time bomb

At the volcano Taal near the Philippine capital Manila there are increasing signs that it could become even more dangerous. Experts discovered a steaming crack on a tourist hiking trail, said Renato Solido, director of the seismological institute Phivolcs, on Friday.

Have you ever experienced a volcanic eruption?

The Taal volcano lies in a lake. Warning level 4 of 5 has been in effect there since Sunday. Phivolcs had declared that a “dangerous, explosive outbreak” was possible within hours or days.

The main crater is steaming constantly, there are irregularly weak explosions, the experts explained. Cracks previously discovered in cities in the area would have widened.

In 1911, 1,300 people died

The valley is located on the main Philippine island of Luzon, about 66 kilometers south of Manila in the province of Batangas. It is a popular tourist destination. Currently, the densely populated area is a danger zone. More than 140,000 people had to get to safety, two have died so far.

The Taal is the second most active volcano in the Philippines after the Mayon. The last major outbreak was 1977, the most devastating in 1911 – more than 1,300 people died at the time. The Southeast Asian island nation with around 100 million inhabitants lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire – the most geologically active zone on earth with more than 450 volcanoes.
