20 minutes – Elefant Maxi is dead

As the Zurich Zoo announced on Monday, the aged elephant bull Maxi has died. The message says that the animal had to be put to sleep because of its increasing age problems. Maxi was 50 years old. Maxi’s family tree includes twelve direct descendants, numerous grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Only a few days ago, the zoo was happy to have an elephant calf. Elephant cow Indi gave birth to her fourth calf on Wednesday. The elephant has been given the name Umesh.

From Thailand to England to Zurich

Maxi was born in Thailand in 1969/70 and came to the Dudley Zoo in England in 1971. A year later he switched to the Chipperfield circus company, where he went on tour. After a short stay in the Longleat Safari Park, Maxi came to Zurich on September 15, 1981 – a good 38 years ago.

The move to Zurich made it possible to add a bull stable to the elephant facility, which opened in 1971. Here the well-trained Maxi was looked after in protected contact. Maxi fulfilled the expectations placed on him: On July 27, 1984, Komali, the first young elephant, was born in Zurich Zoo.

In 2014 Maxi moved into the new Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park with the other elephants. While Maxi had often shown himself uncertain and cautious about changes in his old environment, he explored his new home very briskly and purposefully. In the same year he received the younger bull Thai as a partner at the new location.
