20 minutes – An exceptional revival of volcanic activity

Germany

The Eifel region is showing signs of revival. An unusual elevation of the soil has been observed.

The Eifel is located in western Germany.

The volcanic Eifel is experiencing an exceptional revival, indicate several specialized sites. This region of Germany, where volcanic eruptions still occurred 10,000 years ago, is marked by an unusual elevation of the soil by about one millimeter per year.

It is ten times faster than the average of the last 800,000 years and the possible sign of underground transformations which consist of a rise of hot rocks. According to a study by geologists, the soil rises regularly 400 km around. A phenomenon of a unique intensity in Western Europe, ensures the head of the study, Corné Kreemer.

And this is not the only evocative sign. In addition to the elevations, scientists have also been alerted to mini-earthquakes and gas releases in the region.

Explosive eruptions

Fundamental question, could we know of a volcanic eruption that would become catastrophic in such a densely populated region? No, for the Land of Rhineland-Palatinate which certifies that there is “no danger, not even in the next 1000 years”. The authorities still strengthened surveillance in this region …

The geologist Kreemer is much less categorical on the subject and indeed evokes “a dormant activity”. It does not dismiss an alarm clock in the future, however. And this awakening would then be explosive … In the past, the eruptions in this region were real blasts. This is why large craters turned lakes formed at this place.
