20 degrees in De Bilt, officially the first warm day of this year | NOW

This Monday is officially the first warm day of 2020. A temperature of 20 degrees was measured in De Bilt around 1 p.m.

It is hottest at the moment in Arcen in Limburg, where the temperature at the weather station has risen to 21.4 degrees. It is least warm on Terschelling, where the mercury is at 13.3 degrees. Temperatures rise even further on Monday afternoon.

It is sooner than usual that the mercury rises above 20 degrees, writes weather agency Weerplaza. Normally, the first warm day of the season is measured in mid-April. Also in 2019, the first warm day of the year fell earlier than average: that year, on April 7, the first temperature above 20 degrees was observed in De Bilt.

At local and regional level, the mercury already exceeded the magical limit of 20 degrees on Sunday, but it is not officially a warm day in the Netherlands until that temperature has been measured in De Bilt in Utrecht, the location of the KNMI. There, the temperature stopped at 19.6 degrees on Sunday.

Although the temperature in De Bilt stuck on Sunday at 19.6 degrees, a temperature of 22.4 degrees was measured in Hoek van Holland. It was least warm in Vlissingen and on Vlieland, where the mercury did not even reach 16 degrees.

The warm temperatures are due to a strong southeast wind, which carries warm air from Southern Europe.
