2 works of art by Andy Warhol stolen from Dutch gallery

The Hague, Netherlands. Thieves blew down the door of an art gallery in southern Holland and stole two works from a famous series of silkscreens by American pop artist Andy Warhol, leaving two others seriously damaged in the street as they fled the scene, the newspaper reported Friday. gallery owner.

Mark Peet Visser said thieves tried to steal the four works from a 1985 Warhol series called “Reigning Queens,” featuring portraits of the then-queens of the United Kingdom, Holland, Denmark and Swaziland, a small landlocked kingdom. in southern Africa which is now called Eswatini.

In a telephone interview, Visser indicated that the robbery, which occurred in the early hours of Friday at the MPV Gallery in the town of Oisterwijk, was captured by security cameras and he described it as “amateur.”

“The bomb attack was so violent that my entire building was destroyed” and several nearby stores were also damaged, he said. “So they did that well, too well, in fact. And then they ran to the car with the works of art, and it turns out that they didn’t fit… At that moment, the works were torn from the frames and you realize that they are irreparably damaged, because it is impossible to take them out without ruining them.”

Visser declined to assign a value to the four signed and numbered works, which he had planned to put up for sale as a set at an art fair in Amsterdam this month.

The thieves took the portraits of Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and Margaret II of Denmark. As they fled, the thieves left prints of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Ntombi Tfwala, who is now known as the queen mother of Eswatini, on the street, Visser said.

Police appealed for witnesses as forensic experts examined the badly damaged gallery on Friday.
