From now on, there will be many snowy days in northern Japan, but temperatures will tend to be higher than normal. In areas with heavy snowfall, be careful of avalanches and snow falling from roofs. Pollen season is just around the corner. Sensitive people need to take early measures.

28th (Sunday) – February 3rd (Saturday) Western and Eastern Japan Spring-like warmth

Tomorrow, the 28th (Sunday), due to the influence of a trough in atmospheric pressure, it is likely to rain temporarily from Kyushu to Kinki, mainly along the Sea of Japan side. Rain and thunderstorms will be widespread in Hokuriku from around noon, and the snow will mainly be along the mountains. In areas where the earthquake shook strongly, be careful and be on guard against landslides even if it rains a little.

On the 29th (Monday), the snow and rain from Hokuriku to Hokkaido will gradually stop, and by the 30th (Tuesday) it is expected to be sunny over a wide area. After the 31st (Wednesday), it will likely rain from Kyushu to Kinki due to the front and moist air. From February 1st (Thursday) to February 2nd (Friday), it is likely to rain in the Tokai region and Hokuriku region. On the other hand, as a weak winter-like atmospheric pressure pattern continues in northern Japan, intermittent snowfall will occur on the Sea of Japan side of Tohoku and Hokkaido. However, it seems unlikely that there will be heavy snow.

Okinawa, Kyushu, Kanto, and Hokuriku are less affected by cold air, so temperatures will likely be higher than average on many days. The maximum temperature on February 1st (Thursday) is likely to exceed 15℃ in Fukuoka and central Tokyo. However, it will suddenly get cold on the 2nd (Friday), so please be careful of the temperature difference. The cold weather will ease somewhat in Tohoku as well. It looks like Hokkaido will continue to be freezing cold, especially in the mornings and evenings.

February 4th (Sunday) – 9th (Friday) According to the calendar, it’s spring and the pollen season is approaching.

From Sunday, February 4th to Monday, February 5th, a low pressure system will pass near Honshu, so rain will spread from the west. There is a risk that the rain and wind will increase, so please pay close attention to future information. In Tohoku and Hokkaido, if it rains, there will be many places where it will snow.

On the 6th (Tuesday), the weather improved on the Pacific side. It will be sunny from the 7th (Wednesday) onwards. Please be careful of sources of fire as the air tends to dry out. On the Sea of Japan side, it rains in the San’in region and northern Kinki region, but there are days when it snows even in the flat areas of Hokuriku. It looks like it will snow intermittently in Tohoku and Hokkaido.

Temperatures will be around or above average on many days, and there will be large temperature differences. February 4th (Sunday) is the “first day of spring” of the twenty-four solar terms. Although spring has yet to arrive, on sunny days the sun may feel brighter than in January. Also, there are some places where pollen is flying. If you are sensitive, please take precautions such as taking medicine as soon as possible.

What should I be careful about when the snow suddenly melts?

As the cold weather eases, we are worried about disasters and accidents caused by melting snow. In areas where there is a lot of snow, you need to be careful of the following three points.

1) Melting snow makes it easier for full-thickness avalanches to occur. This is a phenomenon in which all the snow that has piled up on a mountain slides down, and it often occurs when the temperature rises or after rain. Be especially careful on slopes where avalanches have occurred in the past or where there are cracks in the snowpack.

② Rising temperatures will cause accumulated snow to slip, making it more likely that snow will fall from the roof. When working under the eaves, be careful and check the situation above your head. Also, when removing snow, be sure to ensure safety by wearing a lifeline and helmet, and having more than one person do the work if possible.

③ If the temperature rises or it rains on roads covered with a lot of snow, there is a risk of flooding. This is because snow that collects on the roadside can impede drainage, and snow particles can block drainage ditches. If it rains after heavy snow, even if it is not a heavy rain, please be careful about flooding of roads.
