2 TNI personnel hit by Israeli attack on Lebanese UNIFIL Headquarters

Two Indonesian National Army (TNI) personnel were reportedly injured as a result of an Israeli military attack on the headquarters of the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping force in Lebanon or UNIFIL on Thursday morning (11/10).

A spokesperson for the UN UNIFIL mission, Andrea Tanenti, said that Israel targeted three UNIFIL bases in Lebanon. The three bases house one UNIFIL headquarters and two UNIFIL posts under Italian command.

According to a report from an Italian news agency, ANSALebanese military intelligence sources said that Israeli soldiers opened fire on one of the Italian bases on the demarcation line with Lebanon.

The source said that the location saved by the IDF was the base of UNP 1-31 on Laboune hill, an area under the responsibility of the Italian group.

Still according to the same source, after the Israeli drone flew again over the base, Israeli military fire targeted the entrance to the bunker protecting the Italian soldiers. The communication system between the base and the UNIFIL command headquarters in Naqura was also damaged as a result of the Israeli attack.

ANSA also reported that the UN peacekeepers injured in Naqura were Indonesian personnel. Meanwhile, local medical sources said the two UN peacekeepers were not seriously injured.

The head of the TNI Information Center (Kapuspen) Major General TNI Hariyanto confirmed the news that two TNI personnel were injured.

“As a result of this incident, TNI personnel have been redeployed
. He suffered minor injuries to his legs and is in normal condition,” said Hariyanto.

However, Hariyanto did not mention the exact number of TNI personnel who were injured.

Indonesia is one of the countries that send the most troops to help the UN mission in Lebanon. There are approximately 1,232 TNI members serving in UNIFIL Lebanon.

Israel’s attack on the UNIFIL headquarters came as Tel Aviv continued to launch airstrikes and even ground attacks on Lebanon accused of fighting the Hezbollah militia.

This attack also happened a few days after Israel built a military post near a UNIFIL troop post southeast of Maroun al-Ras in the Lebanon region.
