1. Completely “independent”

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, revealed one of the reasons his country wanted to hold a referendum to change the status of the Commonwealth to a Republic. He said a referendum will be held at least in the next three years.

“This is an issue that should be followed up by using a public referendum to decide,” Browne said NPR.

“This is not a form of disrespect towards the monarchy. This is not an act of violence, nor the differences between Antigua and Barbuda towards the monarchy. This is a step in completing the circle of independence to achieve true national sovereignty “.

Despite pushing for a referendum on forming a republican state, Browne insisted that Antigua and Barbuda would remain members of the Commonwealth.

Similar to Antigua and Barbuda, the main reason Jamaica wanted to separate from the Commonwealth was to become a completely “independent” country.

As reported by the Associated Press, Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed his intentions when he met Prince William and Kate in March 2022.

“We want to move forward. We want to fulfill our true ambitions and our destiny as an independent nation,” said Holness.

Britain alone has ruled Jamaica for more than 300 years, forcing hundreds of thousands of African slaves on earth to work in brutal conditions.

Jamaica gained independence in August 1962 but remains a member of the Commonwealth.

Belize also cited complete sovereignty and independence as reasons for wanting to leave the Commonwealth.

“The decolonization process is developing in the Caribbean region,” Belize Minister of Constitution and Political Reform, Henry Charles Usher, told parliament. The independent.

“Perhaps it is time for Balize to take the next step to actually gain our independence. However, that matter is the decision of the people of Belize,” he said.
