“At least I know who will watch over you for me. My father,” Douglas wrote in a message holding his daughter’s small hand. “God, this doesn’t seem real.”

Stroke

After a series of devastating tornadoes last weekend in the southeastern United States, the worst-hit state of Kentucky has now registered 74 deaths. That is ten more than was reported earlier on Monday. At least 109 people are still missing, the governor said in his latest overview. He expects the death toll to rise in the coming days. Fourteen people have been killed in neighboring states so far.

Oaklynn had been hospitalized for two days after the tornado hit her hometown of Dawson Springs on Friday.

Her family says the girl had multiple seizures in the hospital. Doctors suspect she had a stroke. “It doesn’t look good at all. The machines keep her alive. Her head swelled up a lot. She has no activity,” her parents said hours before confirming her death on Facebook.

Car seat strapped

When the tornado slammed into the family’s home on Friday, Oaklynn was strapped into her car seat. The family members huddled in the bathroom. They were then dragged through the air and landed at the neighbor’s house.

Oaklynn was hospitalized along with her older brother Dallas. Her brother was released from the hospital on Sunday.

The family’s home was completely destroyed by the tornado. Chris Smiley, the mayor of Dawson Springs, estimated on Sunday that 75 percent of their small town has been wiped out.
