The Undersecretary of Public Health, Andrea Albagli, referred to the 2 million Covid-19 vaccines that expired before being used in the population.
As revealed by El Líbero, around 1,850,362 doses expired between March 2022 and August of this year, added to this figure are those that were in each regional distribution. Following this information, UDI deputies, members of the Health Commission of the Lower House, announced a summons to the Minister of Health, Ximena Aguilera, and the Undersecretary Albagli.
Given this, the authority pointed out that “the first thing we have to understand is that it is impossible for there to be no losses.”
And he clarified that they were not used because the bivalent version had already arrived in the country, and the Ministry of Health has the responsibility of inoculating citizens with the best vaccine available.
“What happened is that when we were vaccinating with the strategy of the first vaccine, the monovalent one, the second arrived, which is the updated vaccine. And the recommendation made by the WHO is to always make the most up-to-date vaccine available to people,” Albagli said.
Along the same lines, he stated that “the only way we would have had as a government to not incur these losses would have been to make the conscious decision not to give people the best vaccine and that is a health cost that we are not willing to pay.” ”.
The undersecretary also indicated that “we made arrangements for an international donation, we had formal contact with several countries, but there was no favorable reception because the other countries were in the same situation: updating to the most recent vaccine.”
