A user on YouTube posted two hours of 4k60 footage of the GoldenEye 007 remaster on YouTube. Development studio Rare once had it in the making for the Xbox 360 and the game has been leaked via the Xbox 360 Partner net. The uploader states that the game may be released in 2021.
The two hours of footage show all the single player levels the game has to offer, played on 00 Agentdifficulty, with a controller. Subsequently, images are shown of the well-known splitscreen multiplayer of the game. The fact that the game runs in 4k60 in the images strongly suggests that this build will run on a PC, but that is not confirmed. The game appears to be in an advanced stage of development.
If the game does get a release, it will not be through official channels. It has been known for some time that a remaster of GoldenEye is almost impossible to release because the parties that hold the rights over it do not want to cooperate with each other. Xbox CEO Phil Spencer called the situation in 2015 was ‘challenging’ and stated that they ‘always gave up’ on this front. Why Microsoft subsidiary Rare had a remaster in development is not clear. The uploader, Gaslu00, insists that he is not the one who actually owns and can release this leaked build. “It’s not up to me, I can’t publish it. I can only record footage. I’ve been told the game will eventually be released, possibly in 2021.” It is not stated for which platform that game would be released, but it will probably be Windows.
The original GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 was a very popular game at the time. Despite its challenging controls and poor performance, the first-person shooter was a success due to its entertaining single-player campaign and multiplayer mode that could be played in split-screen with up to four players.
