War on Ukraine has claimed the lives of two professional footballers. The sad news is confirmed Professional Footballers Association (FIFPRO).
Russia launched an aggression against Ukraine since February 24, 2022. The victims were not only from the military, but also targeted civilians.
Two Ukrainian footballers, Dmytro Martynenko and Vitalii Sapyo, died on Tuesday (1/3/2022). FIFPRO names the two as the first footballers to die in armed conflict Russia-Ukraine.
“All our thoughts go out to the family, friends and teammates of young Ukrainian footballers Vitalii Sapylo (21) and Dmytro Martnenko (25), the first reported football victims in this war. May both rest in peace,” tweeted FIFPRO on Twitter, Tuesday (1/3/2022).
Dmytro Martynenko is a footballer who plays for the club FC Hostomel. The 25-year-old won the Ukrainian second division player of the year award last season and became the top scorer.
Citing a report Sky Sports Italia, Martynenko died after a Russian bomb blew up the apartment where he lived. Martynenko’s mother is also reported to have died, while his 7-year-old sister survived with serious injuries.
Meanwhile, Vitalii Sapylo is a footballer who plays for Ukrainian second division club Karpaty Lviv. The 21-year-old was killed in fighting near Kiev.
Vitalii Sapylo not only a career as a footballer, but also in the military world. He is a military officer with the rank of tank commander.
Russian military aggression against Ukraine received international criticism, which led to sanctions against the Red Bear Country. FIFA prohibits Russian clubs and national teams from competing in any international matches, including the upcoming 2022 World Cup.
