JawaPos.com – Two cases of monkeypox deaths were found outside Africa, namely Brazil and Spain in just a matter of hours. So far, monkeypox has only settled in endemic countries, namely Africa. But in 2022, monkeypox spread to dozens of countries with more than 21,000 cases and was declared an emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO).
A second person died of monkeypox in Spain just hours after the first confirmed death. The death is believed to be the only one in Europe. Earlier on Friday, there was another death outside Africa. So there are currently a total of 3 known deaths outside of Africa during the current outbreak.
First death, quoted from Sky News, Sunday (31/7), reported on Friday, occurred in the northeastern region of Valencia. Local media reports, citing the regional health department, said the cause of death was encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain associated with infection. The death is believed to be the only one known in Europe.
In Brazil, a 41-year-old man was admitted to hospital in the southeastern city of Belo Horizonte. He died of septic shock in the intensive care unit. He suffers from lymphoma and a weakened immune system that worsens his condition, the Brazilian ministry reports.
There are 75 suspected deaths in Africa mainly Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. More than 21,000 cases of monkeypox in nearly 80 countries have been reported since May.
Around 4,298 people have been infected with the virus in Spain, the most cases in Europe. Of that number, about 3,500 were men who had sex with other men, while 64 cases were women.
“About 120 patients equivalent to 3.2 per cent require hospitalization,” the Spanish ministry said.
Monkeypox is transmitted primarily through skin-to-skin contact. And it can also be spread through the sheets used by someone who has the condition.
Symptoms can include fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, and itching. Many people have experienced mild symptoms but some people can suffer from very painful and contagious for weeks.
