2. Bundesliga: Werder Bremen celebrates against decimated Darmstadt 98

Status: 03/21/2022 00:01

55 minutes with a man down was too much for the guests: Werder Bremen narrowly won the top game of the 2nd Bundesliga against SV Darmstadt 98 after an early red card for Klaus Gjasula.

With the 1-0 (0-0) win against the “Lilien” on the 27th matchday, the Bremen team took a big step towards promotion back to the Bundesliga. Werder has now caught up with leaders FC St. Pauli on points, while Darmstadt is still within striking distance in third place, but now has FC Schalke 04 very close behind them again.

Filling jug the hero of the evening

The hero of the evening on the Weser was Niclas Füllkrug. In the 52nd minute, he converted a precise cross from Eren Dinkçi with a dry shot into the right corner. But even then, the hosts had been outnumbered for 27 minutes.

For Klaus Gjasula it might be time to fundamentally rethink the way he plays football. The fact that he defines himself through hardness is not new. He made history two years ago when he replaced the previous leader Tomasz Hajto from MSV Duisburg with 17 yellow cards in a single season at SC Paderborn.

VAR corrects yellow card

In the 25th minute he apparently wanted to set an example again as the “aggressive leader” of his team, and without VAR he would have gotten away with it. But after referee Robert Schröder only wanted to show yellow for this rather pointless brutal kick against Romano Schmid’s knee, he corrected this decision after VAR intervention in red.

Until then, Darmstadt had been the better team with the more well thought-out game system against the visibly nervous Bremen team. But the long-term majority gave the home side time and space to gradually calm down and make their appearance more sovereign.

Schmidt prevents his own leadership

Shortly before the break, Werder should have taken the lead. But after Niklas Schmidt initially only hit the post, he then stood so awkwardly in the six-yard box that his team-mate Dinkçi shot him just before the line when he tried to score.

After the lead by Füllkrug, Darmstadt continued to try to set one or the other counterattack, but only very rarely became dangerous. Bremen had several chances to evade this nail-biter game until the end, but Schmidt, Dinkçi and especially Schmid in the 79th minute with a shot at the post and Nick Woltemade in stoppage time also missed the greatest chances.

Bremen has home rights again on the next matchday and will host SV Sandhausen on Sunday (April 3rd, 2022), Darmstadt Holstein Kiel will be visiting the day before.
