Schalke wants to “stay clear in the head”
With five wins in five games under interim coach Mike Büskens, FC Schalke 04 has taken the top spot in the 2nd Bundesliga. Now pursuers and fellow relegated Werder Bremen come to Gelsenkirchen for the absolute top game.
With a clear head into the summit: After the impressive Büskens sprint to the top of the table, FC Schalke 04 don’t want to be stopped on their way back to the Bundesliga. “The important virtues are that you keep your head clear,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder after the 5-2 win at fellow competitor SV Darmstadt 98 and added with a view to the absolute top game on Saturday against Werder Bremen: “That’s the next hit. We are really looking forward to it!”
Suddenly the hunted
When “Eurofighter” Mike Büskens took over the traditional club at the beginning of March – expressly only as an interim coach – Schalke, sixth in the table, was seven points behind co-relegated Bremen. After the maximum haul of 15 points from five games, the Royal Blues are now two points ahead in the duel first versus second on the fourth-to-last matchday. But Büskens also urged calm. “We were able to extend the lead. But we know that we haven’t achieved anything yet,” he said.
Bremen, whose trainer Ole Werner even started with seven wins in late autumn, is now grieving over the playful pole position. “You can see that Schalke wins the direct duels and we play them in a draw,” said defender Marco Friedl after the 1-1 draw against 1. FC Nürnberg. But he promised: “We will win the game.” But Werner warned. “In front of the audience at Schalke, it’s a special constellation,” he said, looking at the arena, which was probably sold out with over 60,000 spectators: “We’ll have to improve.”
But although Bremen (54 points) only won one of five games recently, they remain top favorites for promotion with Schalke (56).
