After the 0-0 win in Sandhausen, Uwe Rösler only made one change in his starting XI: Jakub Piotrowski played for Kenan Karaman from the start. There was also a rotation on the side of Bochum: Cristian Gamboa and Simon Zoller moved into the starting eleven for Danny Blum (red card suspension) and Silvere Ganvoula.
The game was of great importance for both teams, because Bochum wanted to regain the lead in the table and Fortuna Düsseldorf to catch up with the top group. The home side dominated the early stages and had the first chances: First Kownacki failed with a header to Riemann (8th), shortly afterwards Gamboa steered a direct decrease from Piotrowski on the left in the penalty area dangerously to the crossbar (9th).
With the first real attack, Bochum then took the lead directly: Holtmann was sent by Soares with a high ball over the left side, passed Zimmermann and lifted the ball into the middle. Zoller set himself apart from Danso in the penalty area and pushed the ball into the mesh to lead (1-0, 12th).

After the lead, VfL increasingly took control of the game, had more possession and let Fortuna run. The home side fought their way back better and better, but were shocked again in their pressure phase: Zulj played a high one-two with Zoller and then sent Holtmann perfectly into the penalty area. Hoffmann sprinted away and pushed the ball over the line to the left of Kastenmeier while falling (2-0, 35th).
Until the break, the guests had the game under control for long stretches and went into the cabins with the guide.

Düsseldorf wanted the connection goal until the final whistle, but was too imprecise in front of the goal. Bochum played it to the end in a controlled manner and didn’t let anything burn. In the closing stages, the substitute Novothny finally put the lid on: Zulj sent Eisfeld across the penalty area and pulled away from a distance. Kastenmeier could only parry the shot forward, where Novothny was standing and dusted off to make it 3-0 (3-0, 87th). As a result, VfL regained the lead in the table and overtook HSV.
