Russia countered Ukraine’s claim that it had sunk its warship near Snake Island or Zmiinyi Island in the Black Sea. Similar claims are known to have occurred at the beginning of the invasion in February.
Reported by CNN, Sunday (8/5/2022) the Russian Defense Ministry through its spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov, said that on Saturday (7/5) evening local time, two Ukrainian Su-24 bombers and one Mi-24 helicopter Ukrainian air was successfully destroyed by Russian air defense systems that controlled Snake Island.
This claim is different from what was conveyed by the spokesman for the administration of Ukraine’s Odesa region, Serhiy Bratchuk on Sunday (8/5). Bratchuck claims it managed to intercept and destroy a Russian helicopter on Snake Island on Saturday (7/5) evening local time.
The Ukrainian military has released footage purportedly showing what appears to be an explosion aboard the plane, where debris appears to have fallen. Satellite images on Sunday morning showed smoke rising from the island.
Bratchuck also said landing craft with a capacity of about 80-100 Russian personnel had been sunk, including two Raptor patrol boats. It was reported, according to preliminary information, about 40 Russian soldiers had been killed.
Not only on Snake Island, both Russia and Ukraine also gave different responses regarding the attack near the port of Odesa.
Russia said it had downed a Bayraktar-TB2 combat drone near Odesa. The Ukrainian military said it had intercepted two cruise missiles launched by Russian aircraft.
Bratchuk said that 10 Russian cruise missiles had been fired into the Odesa region on Saturday. The runway at the main airport was also hit again. A residential district was also hit.
