Abu Dhabi: The UAE will develop solar energy projects in Zambia at a cost of $2 billion. The deal was signed by UAE’s renewable energy company Masdar with Zambian state-owned Cesco. A jointly owned company will be formed between the two countries to facilitate investment.
In the first phase, 500 MW of solar power will be generated. The plan is to increase it to 2000 MW. The new project will bring relief to Zambia, which relies on 75% of its hydropower, while Lake Kariba’s water levels have at least posed a major challenge.
