As part of the ETH Zurich’s RobotX strategic initiative, ABB and ETH Zurich have intensified their partnership in robotics research and expanded their long-term interdisciplinary collaboration. The aim of this initiative, launched in 2019, is to establish ETH Zurich as one of the world’s leading research institutions in the field of robotics.
The ABB Robotics & Manufacturing Automation division will support the ETH initiative with its robotics expertise as part of the RobotX industrial partnership program. The competencies will be brought together in a platform in order to train new talents and recruit specialists around the globe who will promote and further develop a range of future technologies, including mobile robotics.
“Close cooperation between ETH and industrial partners such as ABB Robotics is essential in order to establish Switzerland as a leading research location for robotics. RobotX enables interdisciplinary research at ETH and opens up new ways of working with an industrial partner program, open laboratories and sabbatical programs for researchers from our industrial partners, ”says Joël Mesot, President of ETH Zurich. The basis for the partnership between ABB Robotics and ETH is the collaboration with ABB that has existed since 2014. The robotics expert has expanded the original ten-year commitment with ETH with a donation of 2.5 million Swiss francs to support the RobotX initiative.
ABB and the ETH are already doing joint research in the field of robot-assisted manufacturing in architecture and construction and have contributed to setting up the world’s first laboratory for collaborative robot-assisted digital manufacturing in architecture, which is located at the Institute for Technology in Architecture at the ETH. Together with the ETH, ABB is also part of a project by Schindler, one of the world’s leading providers of elevators and escalators. This involves an automated, independently working robotic installation system for elevators, which is intended to improve quality and make working conditions easier for elevator fitters.
As part of the company’s technology ecosystem, ABB is committed to supporting and collaborating with more than 100 universities, such as the ETH. These collaborations help strengthen university-industry relationships and are important for future innovation and student employment. The long-standing partnership between ABB and the ETH includes the provision of technology, cooperation in university spin-offs and cooperation with the university to create educational opportunities for developing countries.
