The city is planning measures for the public infrastructure in Ausserholligen with a total of 17 sub-projects.

The Ausserholligen area, which has been defined as a development focus, is to be developed over the next few years into a new urban area that brings together work, housing, education, business, shops, restaurants, leisure and culture. Private and public developers want to invest around three billion francs here.

The Bern city energy supplier EWB is planning to build three high-rise buildings between the Weyermannshaus sports and leisure complex and Europaplatz. A mixed use of work and housing is planned. Among other things, around 220 cooperative apartments are to be built in two high-rise buildings.

The new campus of the Bern University of Applied Sciences is also being built in Ausserholligen on the Weyermannshaus Ost site. It will bring together the Departments of Health, Social Work and Economics, part of the University of the Arts and the Rectorate and Services departments. The campus consists of a base and three buildings.

Europaplatz to become a mobility hub

Public transport should also keep pace with developments in the area. The city is therefore planning 17 sub-projects for infrastructure measures in Ausserholligen. A continuous network of paths and cycle paths will connect the areas and provide direct access to public transport. In addition, the Europaplatz area is to become an efficient mobility hub.

In this context, the Bernese government has now allocated 2.5 million francs for the construction of the new BLS stop at Europaplatz Nord. The new stop will be built in the immediate vicinity of the new campus of the Bern University of Applied Sciences, as the cantonal construction and transport directorate announced on Thursday. The current Stöckacker S-Bahn stop will be removed and moved around 400 meters towards Europaplatz.

According to its own information, the BLS expects up to 25,000 passengers to get on and off the train every day by 2040. Today, the number is just over 8,000. (pb/mgt/sda)
