The music and art school in Büdingen has proven what can work when nothing seems to work. Corona has messed up the committed film project for Beethoven’s 250th birthday. There was no giving up. And that has now been rewarded. With a Germany-wide 1st prize and 5000 euros.
The small, indomitable music school in Büdingen made it. More precisely, a lot of hard-working volunteers around Ronka Nickel and actor Hans Schwab. The film “Beethoven fallen out of time” won first prize in the Germany-wide competition organized by the Music Association of Choirs and Orchestra (BMCO). With the professional film, the Büdinger team convinced many users on the Internet and the BMCO jury. The aim was to deal with his life and work in a new way on the occasion of the famous composer’s 250th birthday.
Ronka Nickel you can hear the joy and confidence: “The music school drove through difficult waters and did not let it get down,” says the director. That is now rewarded. Together with her husband – the actor Hans Schwab – she and many volunteers initiated and implemented the film project “Beethoven fallen out of time” ( the WZ reported ).
A vote was taken from 23 submissions on the Internet – the Büdinger Music and Art School (MuKs) won and achieved first place in Germany. There are 5,000 euros for this.
Many hours of work and, above all, a lot of ingenuity and a talent for improvisation went into the project. Because of Corona and the associated requirements, Nickel had to keep coming up with new ideas or rewriting the script.
In addition to the 25 students and twelve tutors from the MuKs who contributed to the film, two bands, two orchestras and two choirs were actually planned. But that no longer worked from December onwards because of the increasingly strict requirements.
“Corona was and is like an iron curtain,” says Nickel. For her it was the first script she wrote and also the first film director she did.
Thanks to Schwabs and Nickels contacts to professional film colleagues like Ekkehard Makosch behind the camera, they were able to manage such a project at all. With a lot of passion, even more commitment and therefore manageable costs.
According to Nickel, the project shows what is possible and what opportunities arise again and again, even in difficult situations. “There is always more than you think.”
This is exactly what she wants to give music and art students and everyone else along the way. It is about the joy of doing and the opportunities that arise. That’s something she learned in the pandemic. And that’s exactly what the MuKs shows. Which did not let itself get down and defied all adversity “everything pulled through”, as Nickel experienced himself. All of Hans Schwab’s creative minds want to use the film to compete in short film competitions. To do this, the film had to be shortened from the current 27 minutes to just under 15 minutes. “Our long credits with everyone involved fell victim to this,” regrets Nickel. The long version will of course be shown at screenings in the region.
What exactly should be done with the prize money in the music school has not yet been determined. “We are all very happy and are still thinking about it,” says Nickel.
Everyone should occur again
Actually, everyone should be celebrating with creative people, but that’s not possible at the moment, as everyone knows. That’s why those in charge hope for September. An open day is planned for September 11th in the music school, which hopefully can take place in attendance. The film is to be shown there. All participants and all those who could not be in the film due to the corona should then have the opportunity to perform musically. To this end, Ronka Nickel would like to come up with her own program and concept that fits the film, but does not simply “pass it on”. Maybe everything will be in contrast to, or related to, the film. The director is not yet sure of that.
With “Beethoven fallen out of time” a film was made that not only depicts the Beethoven year and the music school in Oberhof in a special way, but also shows what is possible when many creative people work together and do not lose courage.
