They explained, “We conveyed our intention to hold the first anniversary citizens’ memorial event in Seoul Plaza through various channels, and through discussions with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, use of the plaza became possible.”
At the same time, he said, “The Citizens’ Countermeasures Council paid the full amount of compensation, including the 62-day incense burner fee and arrears imposed and notified by the Seoul Metropolitan Government last May.”
Previously, the Citizens’ Countermeasures Committee set up an incense burner for the October 29 tragedy in Seoul Plaza in February of this year and reported the use of Seoul Plaza to the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government refused permission through the Open Plaza Operation Citizens’ Committee, but the Citizens’ Countermeasures Council pushed ahead with the installation of the incense burner, and the city held the Citizens’ Countermeasures Council responsible for unauthorized occupation and imposed a compensation of 29 million won on the Citizens’ Countermeasures Council.
The council also said, “The Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced that the ‘Book Reading Plaza’, which was scheduled to be held at Seoul Plaza on the 29th, will be changed to a location and held in the Cheonggye Plaza area.”
