The “Scientific Society at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main” is an independent association of scholars, analogous to the Academies of Sciences in terms of structure and objectives. It sees its primary task in bringing together all academic subjects in an ambience of scientific discourse. It builds on the tradition of the “Scientific Society in Strasbourg” founded in Strasbourg in 1906, which after the First World War finally found a home in Frankfurt am Main under a new name after the First World War. The review of recent history from 1955 contains short portraits of outstanding members of the society, which provide insight into the broad repertoire of the disciplines represented and the historical framework conditions in which the respective researcher life and the activities of the society were embedded. It also highlights the constant efforts to promote scientific projects and their changing relationship with the university, the city of Frankfurt am Main and the federal state of Hesse. The Society’s significant and complete catalog of publications bears witness to the intensity and extent of its scientific work.
