195 prisoners of war returned from Ukraine to Russia – 2024-02-12 18:15:38

/ world today news/ 195 Russian servicemen were returned from Ukrainian captivity, the Ministry of Defense announced.

“On January 31, as a result of the negotiation process, 195 Russian servicemen who were in mortal danger in captivity were returned from the territory controlled by the Kiev regime,” the department said.

In return, exactly 195 captured servicemen from the Ukrainian Armed Forces were transferred to Ukraine.

The freed Russian fighters will be transported by Air Force transport planes to Moscow for treatment and rehabilitation at the Ministry of Defense medical facilities.

All of them were given the necessary medical and psychological help.

“When the Russian military returned from captivity, the UAE provided humanitarian mediation,” the department added.

The previous prisoner exchange was scheduled to take place on January 24. But it failed after the Ukrainian military shot down a Russian Il-76 plane carrying 65 prisoners of war from the Ukrainian Armed Forces who were to be handed over to Kiev.

President Vladimir Putin called the incident a crime by Kyiv against its own citizens. According to him, the Ukrainian side knew that there were prisoners of war from the Ukrainian Armed Forces on board the Il-76, and nevertheless carried out the strike – either due to negligence or intentionally. Judging by the evidence, the plane was shot down by an air defense system manufactured in France or the USA, the head of state specified.

The Ukrainian media first wrote that the IL-76 was shot down by the Ukrainian Air Force, but after information about prisoners of war on board appeared, they removed this information from their websites. Later, Kiev indirectly admitted to shooting down the plane: The General Intelligence Directorate complained that Russia allegedly did not notify of its flight. In addition, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, after reports of the plane being hit, stated that it would continue to take measures to destroy carriers in the Belgorod-Kharkov direction.

Officially, Ukraine states the need for an international investigation, but unofficially, the local media launch the thesis that the IL-76 allegedly carried missiles for the S-300 systems. Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that an international investigation was “definitely necessary” if it focused on the crimes of the Kyiv regime.
