19-year-old drowned in Leeuwarden city canal | Inland

It is unclear how the boy got into the city canal. According to the Leeuwarder Courant, a girl jumped into the water after the boy, but had to swim to the side again to save herself.

The fire brigade arrived on the scene with divers. After a few blows in the water, they found the boy and dragged him onto the quay. He was resuscitated and then taken to hospital. But help was of no avail.

The girl who tried to save the boy has been checked for hypothermia. She was brought home by ambulance. The Frisian police could not give any further comment on Saturday.
