At a press conference, Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories, spoke about the importance for Canada of its relationship with the country’s indigenous peoples.
“This investment means that parents will be able to raise their children with more stability, without worrying about where they will have to sleep the next night,” argued the MP.

“We had initially anticipated the creation of 7,500 units through the initiative, but we are currently at more than 10,000. And that’s only after the first two components! » says the federal deputy.
Mr. McLeod wants to ensure that the rest of the project continues to serve the population that needs it most, particularly the more remote regions of the territory.
For her part, the Minister responsible for Housing NWT, Lucy Kuptana, spoke of the real progress that this investment will bring to affordable housing in the North.
She indicates that the cold temperatures that the territories are currently experiencing highlight the importance of obtaining quality housing for all residents.
Jackson Lafferty, Grand Chief of the Tłı̨chǫ Nation, explains that the 26 new houses that his communities will receive will allow the attraction of important professionals and a stable real estate market.
Steve Vital, chief of Nahanni Butte, explains that he worked for a long time with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation on this file, and says he is satisfied to see it finally come to fruition.
Announced in the 2022 federal budget, the ICRL aims to create more than 15,000 homes nationally.
