18th Samothrace Press Conference: Dates, Goals and Challenges – 2024-09-08 13:51:48

The 18th Journalistic Conference of Samothrace will be held on October 18, 19 and 20, as announced by the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Mr. Christodoulos Topsidis, in a press conference he gave jointly with the President of the Panhellenic Federation of Editors’ Unions (POESY), Mr. Sotiris Triantafillou, and the First Vice-President of the Federation, Mr. Yiannis Voitsidis.

The 18th Samothrace Journalism Conference comes at a critical moment for journalism, focusing on issues that will define the future of the profession, such as the use of Artificial Intelligence and crisis management. With the participation of important Greek and foreign journalists, as well as academics, the conference aspires to promote journalistic ethics and quality information, while at the same time contributing to strengthening the role of journalism as the foundation of Democracy.

Permanent Institution for the Promotion of Journalism

According to AMTH Regional Governor, Mr. Topsidis, the Region not only wishes to continue organizing the conference, but to make it a permanent institution. As he stated:
“The decision of the Administration of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace is not only to organize the Journalistic Conference this year, but to organize it on a permanent and periodic basis.” Mr. Topsidis praised the importance of the conference in promoting quality journalism in Greece, pointing out that “quality journalism strengthens the functioning of the Republic”.

Important Topics and Special Entries

Mr. Sotiris Triantafillou, President of POESY, emphasized the importance of choosing Samothraki as the venue, stating that the island was chosen both for national reasons and to highlight its natural beauty. He emphasized that the goal is for the conference to gain international scope and develop into a pan-European institution. He noted that this year’s program will include prominent Greek journalists as well as foreign participants, such as representatives of New York Times and academics from Greek universities.

Central Themes: Crises and Artificial Intelligence

The conference will focus on cutting-edge topics such as crisis management, with a particular focus on the environmental crisis, as well as the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism. According to Mr. Triantafillou, the impact of AI on journalism is one of the most current topics. In fact, the first European one will be announced in the context of the conference Code of Ethics on the use of Artificial Intelligence by journalists, marking a pioneering initiative in the field.

The First Vice-President of POESY, Mr. Yiannis Voitsidis, also pointed out that Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming our lives and of course does not leave the media or the way in which journalism is practiced unaffected. These developments pose new challenges, both in the production of content and in the preservation of journalistic ethics.

National and International Dimension

The 18th Journalistic Conference in Samothraki is not limited to national issues, but seeks to create bridges of cooperation and exchange of views at the international level. The participation of foreign journalists from major media such as New York Times and the presence of distinguished academics is expected to enhance the prestige of the conference and attract the interest of the international community.

Upcoming Program Announcement

The full program of the conference, as well as the list of speakers, will be announced in the coming days. Details of the application process will also be presented, enabling more interested parties to take part in this important event for the journalism world.
