181 Scholarships for Police Officers and Families to Study Online: Second Stage Announcement

February 27, 2023. Guanajuato, Gto. The official presentation of the first educational support was made for members of police corporations and their daughters and sons, in order to study an educational program of the Virtual University of the State of Guanajuato [UVEG].

Ricardo Narváez Martínez, UVEG Rector, and Sophia Huett, Executive Secretary of the State Public Security System of the State of Guanajuato shared details of the first group of beneficiaries, through a virtual press conference.

The call was aimed at active members of the municipal police institutions in the state of Guanajuato, willing to make a documentary application with the aim of enrolling in one of the different programs offered by UVEG, such as: high school, bachelor’s degrees, engineering or 100% online master’s degrees.

RESULTS OF THE CALL ANNOUNCED

As a result of this first stage, a group made up of 181 active members of the entity’s municipal police institutions and family members will benefit, who will have the opportunity to start or resume their studies through 100% online virtual classrooms.

“We already have the results of the first delivery of these supports derived from this agreement signed on June 23, I am pleased to announce 165 for police elements and 16 for daughters and sons, as part of a scholarship package projected with an investment from the State of almost 4 million pesos, so there are still scholarships available. The programs that attracted the most attention stand out: Bachelor of Laws, High School and Bachelor of Science in Human Behavior,” reported the Rector of the UVEG, Ricardo Narváez.

The group of beneficiaries will begin activities as UVEG students starting March 4. It should be noted that during the presentation a second stage was announced to benefit more police officers and their families.

For her part, Sophia Huett, Executive Secretary of the State Public Security System of the State of Guanajuato, addressed the members of the various municipalities of the State urging them to take a step towards their academic training:

“We aspire to better police institutions and more and better-prepared personnel. Governor Diego Sinhue has placed special emphasis on supporting municipal police forces, and anyone who knows about security issues knows that knowledge is never enough. Academic knowledge and exploration of other areas of knowledge are undoubtedly necessary and indispensable for this training,” he expressed.

The block of police officers benefiting is broken down as follows: 27 in high school, 109 in bachelor’s degree, engineering or, a program for higher university technician, in addition to 29 for master’s degree. Likewise, 5 supports will be allocated for family members seeking to study high school and 11 for applicants for a bachelor’s degree, engineering or a higher university technician. This effort aims to strengthen the personal and academic profile of police officers, as demonstrated by Mr. Ángel Castillo Bárcenas, Chief of Police of Salvatierra, present at the session, who shared the impact on his life:

“I will enter the Master’s Degree in Strategic Management, I have been in service for 22 years and over the years I have seen that it is necessary to always be updated and that we should not settle, because the citizens require it, but also because we need to be an example of our families. I reiterate my gratitude for this opportunity, especially to Ms. who has always looked out for the well-being of the police officers, and Ricardo Narváez for this opportunity to continue studying,” he thanked.

The upcoming opening of the Citizen Security Course stands out, which will be available in the UVEG virtual classrooms starting in March 2024, whose objective is to raise awareness and train personnel involved in public security to improve the exercise of their functions in accordance with conventional and constitutional standards of Human Rights. It aims to address high-impact topics such as the legitimate use of force, the adversarial criminal system, the constitutional and legal framework of public security; among others.
