(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jinsong Oh = A large-scale explosion occurred at a cow farm in Texas, USA, killing 18,000 cows.

According to Associated Press and BBC reports on the 13th (local time), an explosion, believed to be caused by overheating of equipment, occurred at a Southfork dairy farm near Demit, Castro County, Texas, around 7:00 pm on the 10th.

The explosion not only killed the cows on the farm, but also seriously injured a female employee who was trapped in the building at the time and was taken to the hospital. The employee is said to be currently in an intensive care unit.

The Castro County Sheriff’s Office said: “When we arrived at the farm, it was confirmed that one person was trapped in the building and firefighters opened the building and rescued them.”

It is said that there were 19,000 cows on the farm at the time. Local media reported that the majority of them died. According to USA Today, the number of cows sacrificed on this day is about 20% of the number of cows slaughtered every day in the United States.

State fire authorities plan to investigate the specific cause of the fire.

The Animal Welfare Institute, which has been tracking fires on livestock farms since 2013, said it was “the most lethal accident on a dairy farm in the last 10 years of tracking farm fires.”

According to the institute, the worst-ever cow farm accident ever recorded was a fire in an upstate New York farm in 2020, when more than 400 cows died.
