Bangalore: A young Yemeni man who lived with a bullet in his head for 18 years is finally relieved. A three-centimeter-long bullet was removed through surgery at a private hospital in Bengaluru. A 29-year-old Yemeni man, Salai (not his real name), performed the surgery. The bullet was lodged inside the left temporal bone. The young man was suffering from severe headache and hearing loss due to the bullet.
Salah was one of 10 children of his parents in a village in Yemen. His father was a farmer. In his youth, he used to help his father in farming. A life changing incident happened at the age of 11. When he went to the shop, he was caught between two conflicting groups. He was shot in the head and is in critical condition. He was rushed to the hospital but they only cleaned the wound. Salah said the bullet was not removed.
The bullet penetrated through the ear. Therefore, the entrance of the ear became narrow. The bullet could be seen in the ear. But the other end of it got stuck in the bone. The wound did not heal, causing pus to accumulate and infection. This problem later led to headaches, says Salah.
He came to know about Aster Hospital in Bengaluru through some friends. Doctors were initially apprehensive about the surgery. Dr Rohit Udaya Prasad, Lead Consultant, ENT, Cochlear Implant Surgery, said that the risk of massive bleeding during bullet removal was pointed out.
A contrast CT angiography was chosen instead of an MRI to locate the blood vessels associated with the bullet. Finally, the surgery was completed without major bleeding. Partially recovered hearing after surgery. Salih returned to Yemen after the surgery and is now recovering.
