18-year-old Oliver Daemen to participate in first manned spaceflight of Blue Origin, Jeffrey Bezos’ company

On Thursday, the identity of another crew member of the first Blue Origin space flight, the company of Jeffrey Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO, was revealed: it will be the 18-year-old Oliver Daemen, son of Joes Daemen, CEO of the Somerset Capital Partners investments, which was initially supposed to participate in the second flight of Blue Origin. However the unknown person who paid $ 28 million to be part of the crew of the first flight he gave up his seat due to “concurrent commitments”, and therefore he was replaced by Joes Daemen, who then in turn gave way to his son.

The launch of Blue Origin will take place on July 20 with the spaceship New Shepard, consisting of a rocket topped by a capsule that will contain the passengers: Bezos himself, his brother Mark, l’aviatrice 82enne Wally Funk and Oliver Daemen. After take-off, the rocket will rise above 100 kilometers in altitude within about four minutes, allowing passengers to experience weightlessness. In all, the passenger journey should take around ten minutes. According to Blue Origin, Funk and Daemen will be respectively the oldest and the youngest astronaut to ever travel to space.

Daemen graduated in 2020 and is studying privately to obtain his pilot’s license. The first year of physics will begin in September at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
