The general public got to know Emma Raducanu in July when she surprisingly made it to the 1/8th finals at Wimbledon. She is now doing even better at the US Open, with a place in the quarterfinals.
Raducanu, the number 150 in the world, comes from the qualifiers and has not yet lost a set in New York. On the way to the quarterfinals, American Shelby Rogers, who had beaten Ashleigh Barty in the previous round, also had to believe in two sets: 6-2 and 6-1.
“It feels like I’m getting stronger every game,” laughs Raducanu, who now faces Olympic champion Belinda Bencic. “I’m already curious. Belinda is a great player who is in top form. I will have to be ready.”
Raducanu is a true global citizen. She was born in Canada, her father is Romanian, her mother Chinese. When their daughter was 2 years old, the family moved to London.
At her first participation in the US Open, Raducanu is the 3rd player in history to advance from the qualifiers to the quarterfinals. The American Barbara Gerken did it for her in 1981, as did the Estonian Kaia Kanepi in 2017.
