In Suriname, 18 students have successfully completed the nursing assistant vocational training. They received their certificate on Friday (photo). This training was provided by the Labor Mobilization & Development Foundation (SAO), a work arm of the Ministry of AW&J, under the supervision of the Inspectorate for Nursing and Care (IVV) professions.

Caroline de Baas, head of IVV, has indicated that by obtaining this certificate, the students now have the authority to help clients. She is confident that the students will fully commit themselves and respond to developments within the sector. It is also crucial that they especially observe the ethical codes.

The certificate ceremony took place on Friday, December 10, 2021. Minister Rishma Kuldipsingh of Labour, Employment and Youth Affairs (AW&J) and Minister Amar Ramadhin of Health were allowed to hand over the certificates.

The director of SAO, Joyce Lapar, has indicated that it is a special moment for the foundation, which has been providing vocational training for nursing assistants for 25 years now and has provided a well-trained framework to the healthcare sector. The director has encouraged the students to remain committed and to be an example for colleagues who will succeed them. Naomi Esajas-Friperson, Chairman of the Board of Directors at the SAO, indicated during her speech that the trainees have shown perseverance despite all the obstacles and are now being rewarded with a certificate. She also encouraged the students to continue training in their chosen profession and to treat their fellow man with love.

Minister Ramadhin has indicated that with this milestone, the students can contribute to the protection, care and nursing of the community. The minister has indicated that this group is indispensable and that more must be invested in the health sector, which means a profit for Suriname. The minister emphasized that with their certificate the course participants can and are allowed to work at all institutions related to this sector. Furthermore, the government official has encouraged the students not to stop at obtaining a certificate, but also to invest in themselves and continue studying.

Minister Kuldipsingh has indicated that he is proud of the students with obtaining this certificate, despite the Covid-19 pandemic having been an obstacle during the training period that started from 2019. The minister has urged the students to be patient with the clients and to give them the best treatment they deserve. She also passed on that both doctors and nurses complement each other in the health sector to achieve good results. The minister also expressed her thanks and congratulations to all the actors who made this training a success.
