Johannesburg –
Police killed eighteen people in a shootout in the northeast south Africa. Those eighteen people were robbers of money trucks.
“As soon as police approached the address, a group of suspects started shooting, police fired back,” the South African Police Service (SAPS) said in a statement. AFP, Friday (1/9/2023).
Sixteen men and two women were pronounced dead at the scene.
Also, a police officer was “very seriously injured” and was receiving urgent medical attention, SAPS National Commissioner Fannie Masemola told reporters in Makhado, Limpopo province, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) northeast of Johannesburg.
The shootout lasted about 90 minutes, Masemola said.
According to the police, who have been tracking the movements of the suspects for several days, the investigation began in January with the help of the country’s intelligence unit.
“Our intention is to arrest them before they go out and commit crimes,” said Masemola.
Money truck robberies are common in the crime-ridden southern African country.
Last year 10 suspects were killed in a shootout with police in transit after would-be robbers opened fire on a police helicopter and injured one of the pilots.
