18 film projects will be presented at the Baltic Sea Documentary Forum / Article

At the Baltic Sea Documentary Film Forum, filmmakers have the opportunity to present their projects to potential cooperation partners and industry professionals, participate in expert-led workshops and seminars. Forum industry events will take place from 5-9. for September both in person in Riga and online. Certain activities will also be available for a wider range of interested parties.

Every year, approximately 150 film professionals participate in the Baltic Sea Documentary Film Forum: film directors and producers, film distributors, representatives of international TV channels and film funds, as well as filmmaking consultants. Film projects whose creators represent or whose themes depict the countries of the Baltic Sea region, the Caucasus and Eastern Europe are submitted to the forum (this year, due to the war in Ukraine, restrictions were set). This year, the expert commission evaluated 87 project applications. The 18 selected film projects are in top film studios in Georgia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, Ukraine, Germany and Latvia.

Three film projects from Latvia will participate in the forum: “Frankenstein 2.0” (“Death of Death”) will be a film by director Dāvjas Sīmanis about people’s efforts to find a chance for eternal life (producer Guntis Trekteris, “Ego Media”), “Kā salabot sevi” (“How to Fix Yourself”) – director Armandas Zača’s film about the director’s generation, emphasizing the need of his peers to preserve themselves and at the same time integrate into society (producer Gints Grūbe, “Mistrus Media”), while Jānis Ābele’s film “Testament” (“The Last Wil”l) is dedicated to the poet Anatol Imermanis (producers Guntis Trekteris, Dita Birkenstein, “Ego Media”). Before presenting their projects on the film market, the participants of the forum will have the opportunity to polish and supplement them in training under the guidance of experienced documentary film consultants and practitioners. The teaching team will be led by long-time members of the forum, documentary film consultants from Denmark Mikael Opstrup and Tue Stēns Miller. Editing director Phil Jandali from Sweden, director Emma Davey (Great Britain), producer Dagne Vildžunaite (Lithuania) and others will work together with them. The projects will be evaluated by representatives of television, film funds and film rights companies from different countries (CTV (Czech Republic), “Cat & Docs” (France), YLE (Finland), “Taskovski Films” (Great Britain), “Syndicado” (Canada), NHK (Japan), “Lightdox” (Switzerland) etc.).

Along with the market of film projects, from September 5 to 11, the forum will offer a program of international documentaries to a wider audience. A selection of the latest films will be shown in the “K. Suns” cinema, but individual films will also be shown in several regional cities. The film program will be announced in August, the screenings will be complemented by meetings with the authors of the films and a discussion.

The Baltic Sea Documentary Forum was founded in 1997 in Denmark, and this year it will be held for the 26th time. For 18 years, the home of the forum is Riga, where it is organized by the National Cinema Center with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. The forum was also supported by the target program of the State Cultural Capital Fund, which supports nationally important cultural events.
