The name is of Greek origin, formed from the words “geo”, which means “earth” and “ergo” – “work”, hence the meaning of the name – “farmer”. In folk representations, St. George is the patron saint of flocks and shepherds, and since the 3rd century, also of the army.
According to data from the National Statistical Institute, for the third year in a row the most popular name among children born last year was the name Georgi, with which 1,249 were named. 171,356 Bulgarians are called Georgi, and in this regard, the name of the brave saint- patron of the army tops the ranking of the most common Bulgarian male names, surpassing in this regard even the most popular given name Ivan.
