What will our department look like in 25 years? INSEE published this Thursday, November 14, 2024, in partnership with the department of Hérault, a study on the evolution of the population in the department of Hérault. We therefore learn that by 2050, there will be 170,000 additional households in Hérault, half of which in the Montpellier metropolitan area. The department of Hérault will continue to attract people over the next thirty years, but less quickly than today.
It is in Montpellierbut also in the Pic Saint-Loup and the Cœur d’Hérault, that the population will increase the fastest. INSEE mentions population arrivals in the south of France between 2024 and 2050, this will also increase elsewhere in the department, but less quickly.
The population still young in Montpellier, aging elsewhere
We also know that the population will age. In 25 years, more than a quarter of the inhabitants of Hérault will be over 65 years old. But Montpellier will remain a young city. 18-22 year olds will be the most numerous in the metropolis, thanks to the development of universities.
Consequence: it will be difficult to find an apartment or a house. Especially since, according to this study, more and more people will tend to live alone. Will the housing shortage dissuade new arrivals from settling in Montpellier? In any case, INSEE is asking the question. Climate change could also make cities in the south of France less attractive.
