17,000 euros in improvements to the porch of San Antonio for Easter –

The episode of rains in recent weeks had caused damage to this heritage treasure Lorca, essential for the development of Holy Week, and therefore the restoration work of the infrastructure has been urgently initiated.

April 5, 2022. The councilor for Historical Heritage of the Lorca City Council, María Ángeles Mazuecos, has informed of the restoration work that is being carried out on the porch of San Antonio.

Mazuecos explained that “from the City Council of Lorca, through the Department of Historical Heritage, we have initiated an emergency action to set up the porch of San Antonio, after the incidents caused by the recent episode of rains recorded in our municipality, and with a view to the imminent celebration of our Holy Week”.

“The actions that are being carried out are of a preventive and protective nature, the objective being to repair, preserve and enhance this monument since the porch has been greatly affected by humidity and by the recent rains. Therefore, we have initiated a first emergency intervention aimed, firstly, at preserving the monument and, secondly, at preventing pedestrians who circulate there from suffering any damage, including the procession next Saturday.

The mayor has detailed that “specifically, the intervention consists of protection and pre-consolidation work on the paintings of San Ginés de la Jara, the elimination of the deteriorated interior lining and its replacement, as well as the cleaning and sanitation of the perimeter drains to facilitate the evaporation of water from the subsoil, giving breathability to the masonry elements. Work for which the Department of Historical Heritage of Lorca has allocated 17,000 euros.

Mazuecos Moreno has specified that “there are several operators who work quickly so that the porch of San Antonio shines in all its splendor during these days and, above all, next Saturday. A treasure next to the wall, a corner of our heritage with centuries of history that both Lorca and visitors will be able to enjoy again in the coming days”.

The Councilor for Historical Heritage has recalled that “the porch of San Antonio is one of the key spaces in our Holy Week since it is one of the places where the solemn procession of Passion Saturday runs, presided over by the Brotherhood of La Curia, and where the streets of our historic center, in the silence of the night, are illuminated by candlelight, a prelude to the arrival of the Virgen de la Soledad”.

María Ángeles Mazuecos has made it clear that “it is the commitment of the Mayor, Diego José Mateos, and the entire Government team to maintain Lorca’s rich heritage in perfect condition and, furthermore, that this year we can fully enjoy our long-awaited and desired Easter after two years of forced suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
