A 17-year-old Iraqi refugee in Greece asked Dutch Queen Maxima for a personal interview this afternoon. “I’ve been living here for five years and I still don’t have a life,” the young woman, named Ivan, said emotionally a moment later. Employees of the Dutch embassy in Greece, where Máxima accompanies her husband on her state visit, spoke with her and other children.
Together with other refugee children, Ivan had just given an exciting concert, on behalf of the organization Connect with music – a Dutch organization active in the numerous Greek refugee locations.
Emotions roared in the meeting room of a public school building in Athens. The children played Greek, Arabic, Dutch and Argentine music. Dutch Queen Máxima had to swallow a lot during the Argentine song Everything changesa tear fell from his eye. The fabrics appeared at the Dutch ambassador in Athens, Susanna Terstal.
After the show, King William Alexander and Queen Máxima thanked the children and the conductor extensively and then Ivan asked her if she could have a personal conversation with the queen.
Máxima looked questioningly at her husband, who said that “unfortunately it was not possible now”, but then immediately went to Ambassador Terstal. He indicated that he would ‘pursue’ her. Five minutes later, embassy officials checked in with Ivan, his sister Awezan, and several other refugee children who play in the orchestra and rehearse every day. Ivan, completely in tears: “I would have liked to tell the Queen about my life. I have been living here among other refugees for five years, nothing changes. Actually, I don’t have a life yet. “
A boy drags the reporter into a room. “Same story for me, I also want to build a life, but how can I do it.”
Just like with Ivan, his eyes immediately fill with tears. “Nobody can help me,” she concludes.
