According to media reports, a unique step is being taken in road safety legislation in Austria. The Linz-Land district authority is planning to auction off a vehicle that was confiscated from a 17-year-old novice driver. On August 11, the youth was driving on the Westautobahn near Haid at a speed of 198 km/h, which was well above the permitted limit of 100 km/h. The police stopped the car after a laser measurement and confiscated it.

First steps and possible complaint

The young driver from the Salzburg-Umgebung district had his driving licence revoked and the vehicle temporarily confiscated on the spot. The 17-year-old recently received a letter from the authorities informing him of the confiscation notice. He has the opportunity to lodge an appeal with the regional administrative court within the next four weeks. If this does not happen, the case will be forwarded to auction, explains Bezirkshauptmann Manfred Hageneder in conversation with “MeinBezirk Linz-Land”.

Proceeds and auction

30 percent of the proceeds from the auction will go to the state of Upper Austria, while the remaining 70 percent will go towards improving road safety. Manfred Hageneder stresses that strict laws are necessary to counteract extreme speeding. This measure is intended to send a signal and make it clear that such serious offenses are taken seriously.
