A 17-year-old girl from Fuyang City, Anhui Province, mainland China, recently accidentally drank car antifreeze and suffered a severe poisoning reaction. She was rushed to the ICU. When she arrived at the hospital, she had multiple organ failure and was on the verge of life and death. After receiving the diagnosis at Fuyang People’s Hospital, the doctor injected 5 kilograms of high-concentration liquor into the patient’s stomach through nasal feeding to fight detoxification and successfully rescued the patient from the gate of hell.
Fuyang News Network reported that the incident occurred on February 10, the first day of the Lunar New Year, when Xiaojuan (pseudonym), a 17-year-old girl from Funan County, accidentally drank 300 ml of car antifreeze from a plastic bottle. Shortly thereafter, Xiaojuan felt abdominal pain and headache. The symptoms continued to worsen, and double figures appeared when she saw people. After the family found out, they immediately sent Xiaojuan to the local hospital. Due to the urgent condition, the girl was transferred to the emergency department of Fuyang People’s Hospital for treatment.
“Xiaojuan was already in a coma when she was sent to the hospital.” Cai Xiaopei, deputy chief physician of the emergency department of Fuyang People’s Hospital, revealed that after further examination, Xiaojuan’s lactic acid level reached 26mmol/L, and her condition was extremely critical. The situation was not optimistic. It is understood that the main component of antifreeze is ethylene glycol, which is colorless, transparent, viscous, but sweet. After entering the human body, it will quickly transform into the extremely toxic substance oxalic acid, causing serious harm to the human body.
“Fortunately, we have had experience in treating this problem before.” Cai Xiaopei said that although the antidote fomepizole is not currently on the market in China, you can use liquor to fight it in time, and then use blood purification and other methods to remove ethylene glycol and lactic acid. For this reason, the department immediately formulated a detailed treatment plan for Xiaojuan. Since Xiaojuan was in a coma, the doctor injected high-concentration liquor into Xiaojuan’s stomach through nasal feeding to counteract detoxification.
During the treatment, Xiaojuan once suffered from respiratory failure, shock, and multiple organ dysfunction, and her life hung on a thread. The doctor immediately performed emergency tracheal intubation, ventilator support, corrected the shock, and was prepared for ECMO respiratory and circulatory support. During the treatment, the doctor administered a total of 5 kilograms of high-concentration liquor into the nose. After 5 days of rescue in the emergency care unit, Xiaojuan’s consciousness gradually became clearer, and various indicators tended to improve. She was successfully extubated and transferred out of the emergency ICU, and will be discharged soon.
Yang Yihong, director of the emergency department of Fuyang People’s Hospital, explained that Xiaojuan’s successful treatment was due to the hospital’s emergency department’s poisoning subspecialty, which has a theoretically sound and experienced treatment team that can provide emergency treatment when encountering difficult and critical poisoning patients. Accurate diagnosis and timely treatment. Doctors remind that antifreeze must be stored in a special container and placed in a safe place, especially out of reach of children. Once swallowed by mistake, you should induce vomiting immediately and go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible. Do not be careless to avoid serious consequences.
