The police have arrested a seventeen-year-old boy in the investigation into a series of explosions in Vlaardingen. The Rotterdam resident is suspected of involvement in an explosion on Gretha Hofstralaan on Tuesday.
A 26-year-old Rotterdam resident was previously arrested in the investigation. The examining magistrate decided on Friday that the man will remain in custody for another two weeks.
The police do not rule out that more arrests will follow soon. The seventeen-year-old suspect was arrested in the presence of a sixteen-year-old boy. He was also arrested because he had a firearm with him. Whether he also had something to do with the explosions is being investigated.
Vlaardingen was hit by seven explosions or attempted explosions in a short time. It happened again on Friday morning. Presumably the target is the same person every time: a plumber.
Due to the explosions, the municipality has tightened safety measures in the Oostwijk district. This means there will be more private security guards and extra police officers in the neighborhood. The extra protection should be visible especially in the evening and at night.
Mayor Bert Wijbenga finds it “horrible” for all residents that the municipality cannot get these explosions under control. He expresses his condolences to all local residents. “People are sad, scared and angry, and that is of course completely understandable. I am angry too.”
