Till the date, 17 foci of avian influenza infection were recorded on farms in the municipalities of Quillacollo, Sacaba, Sipe Sipe and Capinota. Likewise, from the Poultry Farmers Association (ADA) they indicated that 528,208 birds were slaughtered in the department.

“We have 17 reported farms, that is what Senasag, as an official entity, has given us the information and 529,208 chickens have been eliminated”, affirmed Iván Carreón, vice president of ADA.

They also continue vaccination on farms. Carreón also commented that in the case of the Sacaba farm, where the chickens were slaughtered despite being vaccinated, it is believed that they had already contracted bird flubut ensured the effectiveness of immunization.

“This does not mean that the vaccine is not good. All vaccines are good; what happens is that many times the field virus is more aggressive than the vaccine virus. In addition, we have to take into account that we are using a killed vaccine, it is an oily vaccine, which it only begins to build immunity around the second week and reaches a peak of immunity around 28 to 30 days“, he explained.

He also reiterated that All preventive measures must be adopted in poultry production.

“We are now in a period of emergency. So, we must vaccinate, there is no other alternative, the entire department of Cochabamba should be vaccinated. We have to lower the aggressiveness of the virus,” said the representative.
