16th stage of the Vuelta: Nielsen wins – time bonus for Roglic

Defending champion Primoz Roglic sprinted another small bonus in the fight for overall victory at the Vuelta for professional cyclists, but the day’s victory went to someone else.

The 31-year-old Slovene finished second on Friday on the 16th stage after 162 kilometers from Salamanca to Ciudad Rodrigo and thus received a time credit of six seconds, with which he expanded his overall lead from 39 to 45 seconds on pursuer Richard Carapaz. The day’s victory on the hilly stage went to the Dane Magnus Cort Nielsen, who won the sprint final just ahead of Roglic. Third place went to Rui Costa from Portugal.

For Roglic, the title defense is now only two stages away. The decision about the red jersey should be made on Saturday’s 178.2-kilometer mountain stage. Then over 4000 meters of altitude and a difficult final to the Alto de la Covatilla have to be mastered. In addition to the Ecuadorian Carapaz, Hugh Carthy (53 seconds) also has a chance of the red jersey.

It was not until the Tour de France in September that Roglic gave up a seemingly secure lead on the penultimate stage, back then in a time trial against compatriot Tadej Pogacar. The section on Friday was too difficult for the German sprinter Pascal Ackermann, he had nothing to do with the outcome of the stage.
