Local government sources announced that at least 160 people were killed, and 300 others were injured, in coordinated attacks launched by armed groups described locally as “bandits,” last Saturday and Sunday, on more than 20 villages and towns in Plateau State in central Nigeria.
Sharjah 24 – AFP:
At least 160 people were killed in attacks launched by armed groups, on Saturday and Sunday, in several towns in Plateau State in central Nigeria, according to what the local government announced.
Manday Kassa, head of the Bukos Local Government Council in Plateau State, which has been suffering from religious and ethnic tensions for years, explained that the clashes that started on Saturday continued on Monday morning.
Manday added that at least 113 bodies were found, and he confirmed that more than 300 people were injured and taken to hospitals in Bokos, Jos, and Barkin Ladi. He continued that armed groups described locally as “bandits” attacked at least 20 villages between the evening of Saturday and Monday morning, noting that the attacks were well coordinated.
The attacks began in the Bokos area, then spread to the neighboring Barkin Ladi area, where 30 people were found dead, according to local official Danjuma Dakile.
In addition to these deaths in the Bokos region, at least 50 people were killed in four towns in the Barikin Ladi region, according to what Dixon Sholom, a member of the local council, announced.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Motfwang on Sunday described the attacks as barbaric, brutal and unprovoked, adding that the government would take proactive measures to curb the ongoing attacks on innocent citizens.
Residents of the northwestern and central regions of Nigeria live in constant fear of attacks launched by terrorist groups and criminal gangs that loot villages and kill or kidnap their residents.
