NEW YORK.- A tragic incident has shocked the Bridgeport community, where a 16-year-old boy lost his life after a gun was accidentally discharged in a home.
Bridgeport police, who responded to the emergency call, called the incident “a tragic and isolated incident.”
The tragic event took place at a residence on Pacific Street, between Somers and Wade Streets, last Saturday.
According to authorities, police arrived at the scene around 1:30 pm after receiving a call reporting a person with a gunshot wound to the face.
Upon arriving at the scene, they found the young man inside the home with a critical gunshot wound to the head.
Despite medical efforts, the teenager was taken to the hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit, where he sadly died on Monday.
Neighbors in the area were shocked by the news.
The atmosphere of tranquility was drastically altered over the weekend.
Police reported that according to a preliminary investigation, the victim and a 15-year-old girl were handling the gun in a bedroom when it accidentally went off.
Although the young man did not live in the house, the girl did, according to the property owner, who declined to comment in front of the cameras.
This incident has once again highlighted the importance of keeping firearms out of the reach of teenagers and children. Hope Shand said, “If you have a gun at home, you need to protect it from teenagers and young children.”
So far, police have not revealed whether the gun belonged to someone who resides in the home. The origin of the weapon is one of the many unknowns in this case.
A police spokesperson indicated that no further information will be provided at this time due to the involvement of minors in the investigation.
Captain Kevin Gilleran said in a news release: “The police department’s thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the young victim.”
Police asked anyone with relevant information to contact Detective Holtz at 203-581-5239 or use the Bridgeport Police Tip Line at 203-576-TIPS.
