This May 11, the community leaders of Santa Marta completed sixteen months of judicial persecution for an alleged homicide during the armed conflict in El Salvador, an event that the Attorney General’s Office has not been able to prove, according to the community.

It is worth remembering that Miguel Ángel Gómez, Alejandro Laínez García, Pedro Antonio Rivas Laínez, Saúl Agustín Rivas Ortega and Teodoro Antonio Pacheco, leaders and environmentalists of the Santa Marta Community and ADES-Santa Marta directors, were arrested for an alleged event that occurred during the Salvadoran armed conflict.

The Attorney General’s Office and the judicial system are prosecuting them without, to date, having verified the facts they allege in their accusation arguments, including the fact that the body of the alleged victim does not exist.

The Santa Marta community stated that the accusation by the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic against the leaders “lacks evidence and is only explained by the attempt to manipulate the judicial system to criminalize environmental activism.

“And behind such perverse manipulation of justice are the intentions to reactivate metal mining, despite being prohibited by law,” the community said in a statement.

“We consider that this judicial process seeks to silence and intimidate the organized communities that keep alive the aspirations and dreams of a dignified life, with truth, historical memory, justice, equality and full validity of the rights of all,” he adds.

“That is why we reject this injustice and we will continue to denounce it until we achieve the freedom of our companions,” the community concluded.

Environmental leaders are unjustly under house arrest.
