15,987 new corona infections registered in the last 24 hours

In the last seven days, an average of 11,774 corona infections have been registered per day.

The corresponding average seven days ago was 7356, so the trend is rising.

On Wednesday, 240 corona patients were hospitalized. There were two more than the day before.

106 of the patients are in the intensive care unit, and 72 of them receive respiratory treatment. There are 32 more on intensive care and 23 more on respirator compared with the day before, according to the Norwegian Directorate of Health’s overview.

Also 24-hour record on Wednesday

A total of 554,778 people have now tested positive for corona in Norway, according to the National Institute of Public Health. The previous 24-hour record for Norway was 19 January 2022, when 15,367 infected people were registered.

– This shows that the infection is still rising in Norway, but not as sharply as two weeks ago, said assistant health director Espen Rostrup Nakstad in a comment on Wednesday’s infection figures to NTB.

– Longer doubling time than expected

Nakstad believes the daily figures indicate a 50 percent increase compared to a week ago.

– It may therefore look like the doubling time for omikron is closer to ten days. This is beneficial because sickness absence will be less and the probability of hospital admissions rising in a week is less, Nakstad said.

A total of 1412 corona-infected people have died in Norway since March 2020, preliminary figures show.
